The words we use, when used correctly, have a great effect on people, that was what I learned overall while reading The Book Thief. When I first started the book I was confused as to why the narrator was actual Death and why he was following a young teenage girl around. He had then stated that her story had interested him and during Nazi Germany there was a lot of dying going on so I then understood why the author chose actual Death to be the narrator. In the first 2 or 3 chapters Liesel lost her little brother on the train ride to Germany and her mother had to give her up to foster care so it started off pretty sad. Then, she was moved in with her foster parents where she experienced a change in herself and learned to read and write and about power and what it really means to abuse it. When I was reading the book I learned that a simple act of kindness could take you a long way, just like Hans was so kind to Liesel when she first came into his home and to Max, a Jew, someone who was supposed to be his enemy and how if you give power to certain people they take advantage of it, just like Hitler and his party did during Nazi Germany. If someone else were to read The Book Thief I think they would feel the same way about the power words have on us sometimes. It's something that is still going on today in this time as well, people like bullies say things that make others want to die or feel bad about themselves and famous people can say things to offend other races and people of different genders and beliefs. As humans we do this thing sometimes where we don't think before we speak so we end up hurting someone else's feelings all with the power of our words . I will now think before I speak because I know how much words really mean and how they can affect people in their everyday lives . Overall I really enjoyed reading The Book Thief, it was really a great read and getting an inside look on the very interesting life of Liesel Meminger and her rebellious family and friends and hope that I can get the chance to read more books that Markus Zusak writes in the future.
